In real life, Afro-textured hair is beautiful. When trying to draw it, however, it’s a complete pain in the ass!
Also, her boobs are not supposed to be that big. Big yes, just not that big.
Anyhoo, meet Nyakim Diop! Nyakim is an Ethiopian-Canadian from just outside Strathmore, Alberta. Alberta suffered heavily during World War 3, as American refugees constantly tried to overthrow the Albertan government and establish a new American state. Ottawa’s response was severe, and contributed to the extreme wildfires that burnt much of the province to the ground.
Forced with rebuilding an entire province, the Canadian government sought to attract as many immigrants as they possibly could. Nyakim’s families were two of those who answered the call, travelling from an increasingly-troubled Ethiopia to help rebuild Alberta. The Diops were the first to settle outside Strathmore in early 2035; the Gatwechs settled there the next year.
It was tough early on, but by the time Nyakim was born on August 15th, 2050, the Diops, Gatwechs, and millions of other Albertans both native and newcomer had rebuilt the province. Nyakim’s parents are Joseph and Aberash Diop. She is the eldest of five kids.
Like a lot of Albertans, especially rural ones, Nyakim is heavily into cowboy culture. Starting from the 2030s on, most meat farming changed from ranching to cultivated meat. However, places like Alberta continued to ranch because there is honestly not a whole lot else you can do on bald-ass prairie. Most of the meat grown in Alberta is bison; sustained efforts from Ottawa allowed bison to recover almost completely. The market decline of cattle due to climate change ensured that bison would have customers, too. The cowboy image remains, even in the 2070s, and even people who’ve never so much as seen cattle or bison can be counted on to wear western gear.
Nyakim was interested in machines from an early age, and often helped around the farm by repairing or even inventing new machines. As soon as she turned eighteen, Nyakim moved to Calgary to obtain an engineering degree. The school work was a fun and refreshing challenge, but Nyakim found herself turned off by the arrogance and self-absorption of her fellow engineers. Despite techno-fascism being a major contributor to the last war, most engineers had not learned a damned thing. They still believed that the world revolved around them and that they, and they alone, should rule the world.
Disappointed with her fellow engineers, Nyakim started looking for other opportunities as soon as she received her degree. Heading west, Nyakim paid her bills by working as a mechanic at various tourist traps until she found herself in K’emk’emelay, where she opened a small cyborg repair shop in Neo-Richmond, in the same building as private investigator Aliyah bat Jochebed. Aliyah quickly hired Nyakim to help repair her investigators whenever they got damaged, and the two built a good working relationship.
Apartment expenses proved too much for Nyakim on her own, so she reached out for a roommate. Charley Babbage, netgirl and former gangster, answered the ad and Nyakim has looked out for the poor girl ever since. She also has rivalry with Lani Thompson, a Squamish-Hawaiian Canadian automechanic.
Nyakim is a bright, bubbly, cheerful woman. She loves to cook and sing (badly); wears western wear and is generally a big softy. She’s also a die-hard hockey fan, skilled with a shotgun and revolver, and can fight with a hockey stick. Assuming she doesn’t take you out with one of her gadgets.
Fun fact: Nyakim was named for the two darkest skinned models out there today: Khoudia Diop and Nyakim Gatwech. Not that you can tell from this picture, because CSP’s colour picker sucks.
